I once tried a K300/4 that had a chip of glass on the side of the front element and while trying to see something in adverse conditions (sun hitting the front element at different angles) I could not see any significant flare. Mystery...

Could there be a misplaced flare-controlling ring inside the lens? I
don't know about the 300mm as I don't have the lens anymore but the K
400mm has such a ring two inches from the back of the diaphragm.
