But it's not mandatory now. You're right, no one should impose their
beliefs on others. But having a belief and acknowledging it vocally is not
the same as imposing, forcing to conform, or penalizing for not conforming.

When I was in school participation in the pledge was mandatory. Even at
that early age it seemed offensive and an abuse of my rights to me, and I
refused to participate. No one has the right to impose their religious
beliefs on others.
