But of course. Consider the derivation and meaning of the word. It might never come up, as there'd be limited cause to specify, though.

Atheist is simply a tag religious people apply to the non-religious, ie those who couldn't care less or really don't think about such things.
Tags are often required in order to communicate. But I think not all non-religious people are atheists. Some are agnostics, or at any rate that's what they would prefer to be called. I'm going by comments people have made to me about what they think, not by my opinion of what they think.
