I can't speak to "and others like them" because only Herb knows what he means by "like them". The Amish live the way they do entirely by choice. They don't see themselves as behind anyone. It's a way of life that they believe is more wholesome, more spiritual. They may be right. You might consider visiting the Amish and talking with them before you classify them as being "behind" vs. simply choosing to live the way they do.
