The *ist D is on the way, but without a card. What do I get? I'm quite sure any number of SD cards will work,
You need a compact flash card not SD!!! but what's
the best value for money?
Ebay is usually the best value for cards - there are dealers who send thousands of them direct from Singapore etc. Buying them from photo stores around here is outrageously expensive, typically at least double ebay prices, 1.5x the cost from a PC superstore and they don't tend to have the larger sizes in stock anyway.
If you are using it in the lab you may not need a large card or indeed any card at all. However I would suggest getting the largest you consider sensibly priced and these days 1G cards can be had very cheaply. I used a fancy Lexar 1G write accelerated 60x card (which was in all respects satisfacory except it was *very* difficult to remove from the camera). Swapping memory cards is something my photography can do without and so when the Lexar was stolen I replaced it with a cheaper Kingston 4G card a few days ago (these are now reasonably priced - next year it will be 8G cards) and should provide sufficient storage (for my shooting style) that I can use raw all the time and not run out of space, even on trips. It's just as good as the Lexar in actual use, only higher capacity.
Any card of 40x, (which is all large capacity cards these days) will be faster than the D and hence you don't need to pay for 'premium product'. Do check that it easily goes in and out of the CF slot in the D though - this is a known issue and varies between makes. (The Kingston fits fine).
I've just been
talking to a dealer who offered me a Sandisk 512 Type II card but I'm not sure I know what he meant when he said it would go into my USB port? Does Sandisk sell cards with readers? Or some kind of an adapter? Anyway I'd like to know what the recommended cards are so I can get one before the camera gets here. Does the camera have any internal memory? I know there's a buffer, of course, but cannot find out if the camera will work at all without a card.
Yes it will, I have used mine like this - just remember it has nowhere to save the image unless you attach it directly to a PC.
