I respectfully beg to differ. The government does not confer rights to anyone. Governments try to reduce rights to privileges, with the right to control your use of those privileges going to them. Rights are conferred only by the people demanding and defending them. We as a people seem more and more willing to give up those rights for a bit of imaginary security. The police's job is not to protect you, no matter what it says on the door of the car, but to detain and arrest those who violate the governments rules. Unfortunately, but inevitably, the government is making more and more of those rules for the police to enforce. It is a matter of power and control, anyone who thinks it is not is deluding themselves.

Of course the licensing system does not reduce accidents, it is not intended to, it is privilege license pure and simple. Just like the privilege license you need in this small town where I live to engage in any business. If you think it has anything to do with safety, why is it just as much of a crime to go through a red light when there is clearly no traffic whatsoever, as it is when you endanger many others?

In Saskatchewan, they instituded a points system recently.
It's actually pretty cool. If you are a good driver, you get good driver
points for every year you don't get an infraction or cause an accident.
If you cause an accident or have an infraction, they take some of those
points away.
Lose enough points and they start charging more for you to renew your
licence.
Lose to many points, and they take away your privledge to get behind the
wheel.

Jeezus, I never said I was opposed to the licensing system. I said that I
object to the government saying it's a privilege for me to drive my car. I
earned the right to drive it by proving my proficiency. Government does not
confer privileges on its citizens. It confers rights.

The licensing system obviously works extremely well. Do you notice how there
are never any accidents and no one ever gets hurt?
