I've seen a number of different card readers, some would be easy to insert a card improperly and break a few pins, some would be much more difficult. It seems to be a matter of price. If the lab industry bought slightly more expensive readers there might not be so many problems.

CF card slots are too easily damaged to not go with something that is less delicate.

How so, Bill? It's not something I've noticed.

When I handle the SD cards for my wife's Option S4, I always think they feel fragile (compared to CF) and so small that they would be very easy to lose.

The cards are another matter.
CF card slots have a pin array at the bottom that is fairly delicate.
I haven't heard of too many problems with camera slots, but bent pins in CF card readers are a real problem in the lab industry.
