Along with other marketing missteps the do their best to piss us off...

With a dedicated user base like you guys, who needs a marketing department?

I must confess too. A friend is going to Vanuatu for his wedding anniversary and
wanted a new DSLR. He only had an optio digicam, and no lenses. I _wanted_ to
recommend the DS, but really could justify it except for the $500 difference
with the Canon 350D/18-55mm kit.
The only other two reasons I had were the Limited lenses, which he is not likely
to buy, and the viewfinder. He tried both cameras and couldn't see much
difference in the brightness or size.
The 350D landed yesterday, and he is chuffed, to say the least.

Well I did it. My youngest brother (15 years younger) was the recipient of
an 8MP Canon Rebel XT this weekend. It came with the cheapo 18-55 zoom they
sell in the kit.
He really likes photography and was not in a position to afford this at the
time, so being his oldest brother, I treated him to it, along with a 1G CF
and extra battery.
This is a prime example of Pentax missing the boat. I would have gladly
purchsed him an *ist D derivative if I felt secure in the 'Pentax future'.
Having not released a better camera than the 'D' in almost two years, I used
the mindset of "What if I was buying a new DSLR for the first time?".
Needless to say he was happy.
