It seems to me that Pentax has calibrated the exposure meter in these cameras for the JPEG rendering in camera and does not make any adjustment when the camera is switched to RAW format capture. That would explain the need for adding in more exposure for best results.
In average lighting, however, the meter calibration seems accurate enough and I don't need the added exposure.
