Congrats on what appears to be a good catch. Hope you enjoy it. I really enjoy my 600 FA
>Okay, now I need recommendations for a tripod and head for Big Bertha. For sure you need a gimballed head of one kind or another (Wimberly or Kirk King Cobra). They effectrively take the weight out of the equation when properly set up. (the balance point is set close to the center of gravity of the lens/camera body combo) I have the King Cobra due to its apparent simplicity. I don't feel the Wimberly sidekick is the way to go with a lens of this weight/size. I see people using a ball heads with 500/600mm lens (one way or another you're fighting lens weight/balance) but if you try a gimballed head you'll be a believer. As for tripods, I used a Gitzo 1410 for several years - finally went with a Gitzo 1548 for the reduced weight. A save of several pounds. I haven't done an A-B comparison of the two and the effect on image quality. BTW, I still have the 1410 & it is for sale. You'll probable need some way to carry that beast. I use a long lens case by Kinesis, that lets me carry, on my back, the 600 w/camera body attached, a tripod strapped on the outside, with a couple outside pouches for misc. I'd reccommend adding a 1.4XL teleconverter to you kit. Enjoy! Kenneth Waller -----Original Message----- From: Joseph Tainter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: With a fluttering heart... But my heart really is doing a pitter-patter at spending so much. Right now, fortuitously, I have the money, but still feel nervous spending so much. Okay, now I need recommendations for a tripod and head for Big Bertha. Bill, what did you wind up getting? Please recommend some affordable ones as well as the best ones. Right now I am feeling in economizing mode. I think the lens is about 15 pounds.
