The stability difference between the Manfrotto 075 (which is a fairly
heavy tripod) and the Gitzo 1548 is incredible.
I'm not familiar with the 075, but did you do any testing to come to this
conclusion?
I did not do scientific testing for this, but I can see the stability
difference through the viewfinder, especially with a 2X converter on the
600. Under similar conditions I can use double the exposure time with the
Gitzo 1548 then I can with the Manfrotto 075 and have equal image
sharpness.
Manfrotto tripods seem exceptionally prone to ringing.
Wrapping a bungee cord around the top leg locks sometimes helps.

I would go a step further & state get the "best" there is. With the money
investment in a 600, you'd be foolish not to.
I thought about saying that, but do not know what his budget is.
Sadly for his budget, Joe has pretty much got to spend the bucks to get the
support required to hold up his new lens, if he really want to take
advantage of it.
