Gold and Goose, the famous British motorcycle racing photographers, use a 
fanny pack to support the bottom of the monopod, in order to be able to pan 
to follow the action.  Manfrotto even makes a special waist pouch for the 
purpose, similar to what a flag-bearer in a parade might use.
