i have a Wimberley head and a Wimberley Sidekick. the side mount on the Sidekick is a definite disadvantage in a most important way. when you have everything put together and make a change in the field, loosening the clamp to rebalance leaves the system with all its weight sitting on one clamp jaw. this means that it doesn't slide back and forth easily to find the new balance point. if you never add or subtract equipment after mounting the lens on the head, then this isn't important. the Wimberley head leaves the weight on the bed of the clamp and it is far easier to slide back and forth after a change.
