To use continuous autofocus with running children, I select the autofocus 
sensor manually, with the focus knob turned to the selective position.  Here I 
believe I was using the sensor one step above the middle with the camera 
vertical. Sometimes I go two steps above the middle position. I push the 
shutter halfway, keep the moving child in frame with the focus point on his or 
her head and push it all the way when I have the shot I want. The camera will 
continue to adjust focus as the child moves.
