thats his problem. if he sends you a message, then only you have the decription key (im talking public key crypto here), unless you are careless.

All these sites started back when Google said they scan words in
emails in order to target text ads to you. People reacted like it was
the end of the world.

The fact is, all online email services scan your emails. Maybe to
serve you ads, maybe to search for viruses. It's not like they have a
bunch of interns looking at the emails you send your lover--it is a
computer doing it.

More: email should never be considered private or safe. It goes
through the net unencrypted, you know. Anyone can look at those
packets with a little effort. The fact that Gmail by default keeps all
email without deleting any is not really a big deal considering that.

How do you know your isp is not backing up their data *including your
email!* and keeping copies of that forever?

Me, I think there's safety in numbers.
