Provided the camera is directly above the tripod, the whole weight will press down onto the tripod, irrespective of how the camera is attached.

I was concerned about the shearing force that would be applied to the mount when I was looking at gimbal heads. From that perspective, the Wimberley is a better design. I'm also clumsy enough that I wanted the mount to be under the lens when attaching or removing the lens from the mount.
