It's funny you mention the darker exposure as I just edited out several images of this scene because the darkness made the background detail more invisible.

I think that you have done a nice job here.  It is always hard to show
the magnificence of the forest.  The colors are so similar and the
patterns sometimes get lost.  Just not quite the same as being there.
The one thing that comes to mind that would strengthen this image is
darker trunks.  It would help the greens to stand out a little more.
Along with that would be something contextual to help us realize the
size of these trees.
