Jim, Thanks for the suggestion.
Your idea gave rise to one of my own. Use the lens reverse mounted for macro work, either on its own or on tubes or another lens. The glass looks good and this way the fact focus is stuck at infinity will make no difference. I'm planning to do some more snowflake portraits this winter (we had our first flurries today!) and this lens will work great for that.
