The D200 seems a far better deal and a camera that will outperform the 5D in several ways. Actually, if I were a Canon shooter, I suspect I'd still opt for the 20D over the 5D.

Yes, same here. I still have a small collection of some favorite Canon EF lenses (20/2.8, 28/1.8, 50/1.4, 100/2) ... I could see myself to offing the 10D body and 20mm lens, picking up a 20D and 17-40/4L, 24-105L IS.

I'm also very disappointed in the wide-angle performance with L glass, although I wish he had tested with one of the current L wide- angle zooms (17-40 or 16-35 rather than 17-35), I suspect they might perform a little better, at least with regards to CA.

Performance of wide angle lenses designed for film, not for digital sensors, is really the issue here. The two capture mediums have different requirements and tolerances for light path and other characteristics. The 17-40L is a recent enough design that Canon might have put some effort into the design with digital sensors in mind.
