This is a kind of obvious, but very interesting statement Mat. It reminds me about a statement about the music of Miles Davis before he went jazz rock. Somebody (don't remember who) explained the magic of this music with saying something like; it is about space and understatement. The important notes isn't the one he plays, but the notes he _doesn't_ play. This approach to music was very radical. What Miles did was to leave place for the listener, make the listener improvise him/herself. My spontaneous comment to the picture was that it made me think of my father. That was my "improvisation" on the subject. Now when I look a bit closer at the picture I don't really find much that reminds me of my father, except the hand and the ring. The clothes are obviously of an old man, but my father doesnt dress like him. The rest off what made me think of my father, was added by me. What is it in this picture that made me fill in what was left out? The fact that the person just is half a man, is obvious. (Half a man as in, lower part of the body). Thats the "space and understatement". But there is more. Al the diagonal lines, leading my eyes to centre of frame, but also the other way, out of frame. The picture and Mats statement made me think. Brilliant observation Mat, and brilliant not seen Shel. You kind of saw what isn't there ;-) Tim Mostly harmless (just plain Norwegian) Never underestimate the power of stupidity in large crowds (Very freely after Arthur C.
