Thanks, Christian.  I did find out that they are not very approachable
- I was shooting with a 400mm on a DSLR.  I think the only thing I had
going for me was that they were up the hill from me so it wasn't as
easy to see me coming.

I forgot to mention that the composition really works and the sublte color (mostly shades of brown) gives the birds real "life."


I can say that watching them move through the viewfinder, they seemed
much more like dinosaurs than birds to me.

Bob Baaker, a famous dinosaur paleontologist, described T. rex as "the seven ton roadrunner from hell." His book "The Dinosaur Heresies" was one of the first to put forward (to the general lay-public) the theory that dinosaurs are in fact birds... or that birds are in fact dinosuars. Basically birds=dinosaurs.
