Same here. My Gitzo 1548 only has a flat base.
I only extend the legs fully when absolutely needed and keep the thinner leg
sections as the last to extend fully.

has the leveling base instead. i do have a center column, but i seldom use

I can't figure out why you'd extend the center column?
With the concern about stability/vibration, raising the center column is
going in the wrong direction re stability.
