Keeping it unpaved really helps them maintain the road due to frost heaves. They simply regrade it. Can't do that (easily) with a paved road.
However when it rains it can become a quagmire.

Drove the Alcan hwy year ago. On the Canadian side you could maintain a fairly high rate of speed (unpaved). Once we hit the US part of the Alcan, (paved) you had to be watch out for the heaves, some sections could make you sick & you definitely had to slow down.

An yes, the Milepost is a must for touring by car in Alaska.

"The Milepost" book is invaluable as Ann says.

When we went on the road it was pretty decent. Any kind of vehicle could have made it. So it's been upgraded I guess. Still unpaved. Several places we needed to slow down to under 20 because of the squirrely gravel.

Do the road next time you go... but don't tell
too many people :)

Ann, thanks for the info. That's one road in Alaska I haven't been on.

I'll keep it secret, it'll be between you, me, Cory & Tom. <VBG>

If this was taken from the only road in Denali, N.P., I think this may be the first time I've heard it referrd to as a "Highway". More of a well maintained 1.5 to 2 lane lane dirt road.

Well seen & captured.
Thanks for posting.

Ken, Actually, the Denali "highway" is really what
it is called (got a copy of Milepost handy?) It
isn't in the park at all. It is an extremely poor
dirt road
(well, fair gravel near the Georges) that connects
the Georges parkway with
the Richardson along the Alaska Range.
It goes between Cantwell on the west and Paxton on
the east.

A few miles east of Cantwell affords, as Cory
mentioned and I did earlier, a
great clear view of Denali. Do the road next time
you go... but don't tell
too many people :)

Taken this summer. The Denali Highway is a 135 mile stretch of dirt road
with virtually no services, yet wonderfully beautiful scenery.
