Of course no one has to it just offers a far more consistent method to load film. In marginal light you can end up waiting a few seconds between film advances that is unless you pop up the camera to find a light source, IOW it's far easier just pre-setting the film speed dial. Been loading film this way for almost 20 years now, I haven't accidentally left the camera on auto for more than a decade now.
