Well, originally I was "guilty" of using 1/2000 or 1/1000 for firing the pre-shots simply because that took the least amount of effort (to move the shutter speed dial away from auto). Later on (after at least one disaster), instead I got into the habit of giving the dial "a good twist" (or "a good spin") over to the slower speeds before firing off the pre-shots. Then, if I forgot to change back, it would be readily apparent to the ears (and to the hands), usually with the very first shot (assuming that I wasn't paying enough attention to the meter readings in the first place - <g>).
