Ultimately I am trying to decide if it is worth spending the money (probably around $400) myself to buy a flatbed scanner with the ability to do a half decent scan of medium format...or should I continue to let the lab do it.

Depends on how good a job the lab's scanner really does. A 32 mb scan may be plenty if it is really sharp and has a good tonal range. The density range of the lab scanner is probably much better than you can get out of a $ 400 flatbed. You can upres that 32 mb scan considerably with Photoshop CS, CS2, or Genuine Fractals. The tendency with digital is to get hung up on file size, and that's like buying a car purely on horsepower.
