I like both the pictures. You have composed the Real Southwest photo quite well. I like what you included and what you left out and the angle.
The bird, of course is great too though as note yourself, the attention keeps returning to the out of focus eye area. Good attempt nevertheless. Hope you have fun with your new lens.
