| I was wondering what you guys do to protect expensive
| Pentax (and cringe...other brands) camera gear while
| travelling. I mean, here in New Zealand, you could
| wander around with 10 of the latest high-tech bodies
| around your neck, and still have 10 bodies when you
| got home. Or you could leave one on the ground and
| either 5 people would come running after you to return
| it, or it would still be there when you went back 2
| hours later. But I realise most countries aren't like
| this.

Wow! I definitely have to move to NZ. Is the crime level in Your country any
higher than 0?:) Here in Poland - or to be more precise - in big cities like
Warsaw, where I live, things don't look that good...

| Do people try and cut the straps of your camera-bag? I
| have heard of this happening with hand-bags. And what
| if you just put it in a normal bag?

Pickpockets are not the problem. No, one don't get the bag straps cut - more
likely face several bulky guys dressed with Adidas sportswear, who say:" All
right, you sucker, give it to us, or...!" What are they do it for? Money?
Nope... Just for fun...
Drunkards or drug addicts can be a problem too (they, on the other hand,
need money for alcohol or drugs), especially for women, but if one isn't
greatly outnumbered, can solve the situation pretty easy...

| How do you get it
| out to take a photo without attracting attention? Or
| do you just not take photos?

A good question... I use a normal camera bag (or backpack), since I want my
equipment to be properly protected. If I shoot landscapes or nature, there
is no problem, since it happens mostly in the country. But if shoot some
cityscape or architecture (etc...), I'm VERY cautious: try to shorten the
shooting process as much as possible (compose the scene with my eyes and
with my equipment placed in the bag, use AF lenses), watch the people
passing by, try to shoot from hidden places. Working early in the morning is
also a good idea and I have the bonus of good light. And I NEVER hang my
camera on my neck or shoulder when I'm in a city, unless there are other
people with cameras (mostly tourists) around or I know the place to be well
guarded by the Police.
