While the camera was off the microscope I decided to clean the sensor. I did it with Blue Tak, as I'd threatened to do earlier, on the end of a plastic rod. Nearly all the intrusive spots have gone and those that remain are almost invisible at 200% so there we are. Up to now I've only cleaned small CCDs in which is was possible to entirely cover the surface with gunk and peel it off from one end. In the *ist D I had to dab with a slightly rounded mass of the stuff and obviously didn't manage to cover every pixel. I'll make a tool that will cover the whole sensor and apply a layer of BT to that and try again some other time. However 99% of the dust spots have been cleaned off.
