I was using less precise terminology, perhaps, but what I commonly hear in discussions. When I refer to an 8-bit file, or Photoshop calls it an 8-bit file, we mean 8 bits per channel, not 8 bits total. If you look at an 8-bit file in Photoshop, you will see that each channel of RGB has only 256 possible gradations (from 0 to 255).
