I do not agree with you.
Maybe it depends on type of "corner store".
My Lab, which does film scanning writes on CD JPEG files 3072x2048 or
something in size.
They are over sharpened little bit, have grain aliasing problems.
NPH-400 was complete disaster... I'm talking about Noritsu Lab machines
that have film scanning capabilities.
So, 3170 is pretty bad, when scanning 35mm negs. (Colors are not always
detected properly, etc...) But slide films are good. Not too sharp, but
without that bad grain artifacts.
3072x2048 jpegs can be maximum printed at A4 (20x30cm) resolution, but i
think, with Epson files you can get A3 (30x45cm).

Not Good! You'd have a better image by going to the corner drug store
and getting them placed on an inexpensive small file CD.
MF are not too bad. Depends on your expectations. I've printed some
8x10 3170 MF scans that looked go enough to have sold a few out of the
matted/unframed crate in the store.
Neg strips are a special problem, as the carrier design allows them to
curl at will.
