You can get close without monitor calibration, although it might take more
fiddling to get there.
Search the Web - there are calibration routines that will help with
white/black settings.
The last thing you want to do is chase color with individual printer
adjustments for different images.
I'ts a bit frustrating @ first but after you get it under contol it
shouldn't require additional effort on your part.

To be honest: I don't think my monitor is worth the price of calibration.
What I've done is to set the white point at something I _know_ is near
white. At screen it looks a bit yellow, but I believe it is near neutral.
To uncheck "printer colour control" sounds like an excellent idea.

Is your monitor calibrated?
Initially, at least, stick with paper from Epson. Use the build in
profiles.
Uncheck "printer color control".
