Yes, in terms of safety. (But car is really a poor analogy to camera.)
And I am not talking about zillions of airbags (which in some circumtances
can actually be dangerous, like putting a child in the front seat) that
they put into a car nowadays.
Safety is the most worthwhile automotive advance through recent years. The
structural strength of the "passenger cell" is higher, with calculated
crumble zone in front to absorb impact energy. The side doors are
reinforced (take a look INSIDE the side doors of your Cadillac and
Mercedes, there is practically *NO* protection against side impact
collision); side guard curtain (non-convertible) and pop-up roll-over bars
(convertible) protect you in case of roll-overs; and dash board material
is more "human-friendly". And I see many older cars without basic safety
features such as headrest - and the combination of no headrest + shoulder
seatbelt is a killer.
And electronic device such as anti-lock brakes, emergency brake-assist and
electronic stability program (ESP) are great safety additions for
non-professional drivers. Modern cars are also designed to reduce
injuries to pedestrians during accidents.
I am not against vintage car fans; many cars still look great and drive
great. But in case of accidents, both the drivers/passengers and
pedestrians have a higher chance of survival in a modern car.
There is no parallel on safety in camera; that's why car is not an
appropriate choice as an analogy to camera.
