I realized that eventually, but only eventually and after some rather
deliberate consideration of the matter...

I only play(ed) some tennis as far as similar activities go... However
imagine that you make a move with your sword held this way... Imagine
further your attack is blocked by another sword... So your finger has
to sustain quite a hit... I know I would never be able to hold my
tennis racket if I had to hit a ball like this...

But then again, like you said - the guy is an expert... I assume he
wasn't having fun at your expense at the time.
