I've had numerous Pentax 85mm lenses: SMCT 85/1.8, two SMC-Pentax 85/1.8,
M/85.2.0, and two A*85/1.4

My favorite is the SMC-Pentax 85/1.8, often described as the K85/1.8.
Optically the A*85/1.4 is a little better, and when used on a tripod the
differences between it and the K85/1.8 can be seen. Bokeh is a little
different between the two lenses, although neither produces poor OOF images.

However, when used hand held any qualitative difference between the two
lenses is reduced.. The A*85/1.8, being larger and heavier, is, for some
people, more difficult to hold steady, and picture quality can sometimes
suffer. The smaller, lighter K85/1.8 is easier to hold - and easier to
carry around as well. The slightly brighter view through the A*85/1.4 can
sometimes help focusing, although I believe that the choice of focusing
screen can be a significant influence as well.

I sold both my A*85/1.8 lenses because I rarely used them, much preferring
the smaller, lighter K85/1.8

The above are my experience with these lenses. YMMV ... some people can
handle larger, heavier lenses better than others. Sometimes the camera one
uses with a lens is a factor.
