>I read list for 2 months but I became an owner of my firts Pentax >equipment last week. I bought mz-5n and 28-70/4 (I hope my last zoom). >I want to buy some filters and have 3 questions: >1) I remember discussion about Pentax SMC Skylight filters. I heard >Pentax doesn`t make them already and now Hoya makes them for Pentax. The >price is the same. I think Hoya also made them before and only changed a >label. Are they still better then B+W ones? I don't know if Pentax made their own filters, but Hoya filters are not Pentax SMC filters. There are basically 3 different grades from Hoya - regular (double-coated or uncoated, depends on which filters), HMC (soft mulitcoating) and HMC Super (hard coated on both sides for better protection). Btw, Pentax SMC filters are still available, but much depends on where you are. Of the three, the HMC has the worst coating (damaged too easily). >2) What is a difference between "slim" and "normal" filters (except >prices)? May "normal" cause vignetting? Slim means the filter mount is thinner. They did that by removing the front thread (means you cannot mount another filter in front). Whether these filters are neceassily depends on what lenses you use. My widest lens is FA*24/2 which has no problem with the super-thick B+W CIR-PL 67mm. >3) If I hardly use AF should I buy a circular polarizer? I know that some >light metering sensors needs them - how about mz-5n? I`m sure I won`t use >a polarizer with 28-70/4 in AF mode because this lens has a rotating >front element. I think the answer is no. As long as the light sensor is located below the mirror (matrix and spot meters), cir-pl is required. It doesn't matter whether the camera has AF or not (LX is one example). Besides, cir-pl is a long term investment. regards, Alan Chan _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List.
