I always liked the shot but *really* appreciated it when I saw a print
at the George Eastman house. Especially when I learned that, as Ann
says, it was essentially a grab shot. I had always imagined him
meticulously planning the shot, working out the exact location and when
the moon would be in the right phase at the right time, metering
extensively using the zone system, etc. Nope. He was just driving by
with his son when he saw the scene (and almost crashed the car when he
did). He jumped out, set up his camera, found out the batteries in his
light meter were dead, guesstimated the exposure and got one shot. Any
photographer of any skill/experience level can relate to this kind of
experience :)

I think it also sends a message to some Ansel devotees who won't shoot
their kid's birthday party without spot metering and calculating all the
zones...
