I like the way you've tamed the highlights, but some shadow detail has been lost. Most noticeably in the hair on the near side. But the skin tones are better than the earlier version. I don't have the other for comparison, but have you softened the skin detail as well?
I did lots to the skin tones. I started with four layers, one got Neat Imaged, one got curves adjusted, one I did a bit of Gaussian blur and one got left pretty much alone, but was the base for the healing brush and other retouching.
This was after I did a Channel Mixer conversion to monochrome. Then I blended them until they looked as right as I could get. Next time, I think I'll write down the procedure..... William Robb
