I'm in the middle of a similar family project. I thought the scanning would be tedious. Other than time consuming, it's not that bad. The part I don't enjoy is taking the photos out of the various album pages that the family has used over the years. When I accumulate enough of it, I'll upload it to lulu.com and have books printed for the other family members. I've seen the quality of the stuff that comes from lulu and it's more than good enough for this type of project.
