I once owned the 'F' version of this lens but didn't much care for it. That was back in my film days, and as I mentioned earlier, I didn't find
the focal length all that useful to me, plus it didn't seem all that
sharp. Now with the FA, in my limited use, I find the FA to be sharper
and to offer smoother bokeh. I like that.

Is or isn't this the same lens optically as the A 28/2.8 (which I don't
believe has had many fans)?

The F and A versions seem to be the same, optically. The FA version is different and allegedly (from all users I've spoken with!) superior.

I am not sure about whether the A28/2.8 has many fans. I know that mine is quite a nice performing lens on the DS body. Not super sharp wide-open, very sharp by f/4-4.5 and smaller, and beautiful out of focus rendering everywhere. It was the first secondhand lens I bought for the DS. The A24/2.8 is sharper and more contrasty wide open so I've used it more, but I took a lot of pictures with the A28 that are quite satisfying.

These are two of my first shots with the A28/2.8:

It's also small, light, easy to scale focus, etc.
