Distance from the focal plane may play affect quality but lens mount diameter isn't likely to to any significant extent, lens and sensor design would play a
far greater roll WRT FF suitability (fall off and fringing etc.)

A large diameter lens mount and a short register leaves more space for correcting elements at the rear of a lens unit, used to provide greater telecentricity to the edges and corners of a large sensor. Sensor technology may well come to make this less of an issue, with sensors that can accept light at higher incident angles it may become a non-issue, but today it is an issue with 24x36mm sensors and very short focal length SLR lenses, causing light falloff, lower resolution at the corners and edges, and móire artifacts.
