.PEF files are read by quite a few different programs that don't understand DNG. In my opinion, DNG has not become a standard de-facto (and as widely used) yet as it happened to PDF format for documents. Yes, it has a good potential, but until it has been widely accepted as a standard, it's too soon to forecast. I also heard that there is an alternative "universal" format (was it NISO Z39.87 or yet something else?) that is also been promoted by some other group(s) as a raw image standard.
