Because if you ski a lot, you wear through your fingers and
palms too quickly unless they're reinforced.

Thankyou. That's useful information. Even if I like skiing a lot I'm
unlikely to do it more than 2-3 times a year, so I won't need to go to the
expense of buying armoured gloves.

The sides of your skis are sharp: most damage is done when carrying them. I've seen cheap gloves develop holes between thumb and index finger within a week...
