Jewel cases do better than stacking spindles for protecting against scratches from grit and allow direct access to individual disks easily, but take up a lot more space on the shelf. In one test they also showed the greatest damage to CDs/DVDs when exposed to hot storage conditions (like in an automobile interior or on a shelf where direct sun could strike them) but I doubt that people here would consider that to be proper storage for their digital data ... ;-)
