Hi Ken ...

Well, this is often referred to on the list as the "Bow-Wow" Takumar,
indicating that it's a dog. There are claims of flare, distortion,
and other optical problems. However, many years ago this was my first
wide angle lens, and I was quite satisfied with it. Resolution wasn't
the greatest, but I was shooting a lot of TX in Acufine, and didn't
care about the finest resolution. Subsequently I used the lens with
finer grained film and was still pleased with the results. The later,
SMCT version, is a better choice wrt contrast and flare.

It should be noted that our very own Bill Casselberry uses this lens
and, like me, seems to be quite satisfied with it. I was very sad
when mine got damaged and couldn't be repaired. Fortunately, I was
able to grab a K20/4.0 for a reasonable price, and it's a better lens
all around. Nonetheless, I don't feel the Super Tak and SMCT 20/4.5
deserves the reputation that's been dogging it here on this list.
