* The way I understand it (could be completely wrong) is that the focal length is no way necessary but (big but ... no pun intended) it will probably way more efficient if the system knows it.
* Also, let say DS-class camera have auto-only AS mode and lets D2 (or whatever name) give the possibility of dialing the focal length. No problem that way ;)
