That's weird, I don't recall the geometry on mine as to
whether the distortion was that noticable or not ( Ill admit
I havent used it much ) but I do recall the sharpness
and contrast as being incredibly good, I would say oustanding,
rivaling my primes.
Like you said, mileage may vary. Maybe Pentax's quality
control had taken a nose dive already at the time these
lenses were made and you just didn't get "good " ones...

I was never satisfied with the M75~150.

Distortion at the wide and long end was unacceptable for most subjects -
I've never seen greater distortion in any of my lenses.  The wide and long
ends were softer than I liked, sharpening up by around 90mm or so and
staying sharp through about 135mm.

It's a good portrait lens as the distortion is generally not an issue with
that type of photography, and the softness can be an asset.  As a general
lens, it's only fair.

I had two examples, sold 'em both.  One buyer was happy, another returned
his for the reasons given above.
