A rather similar idea in physics (and in science in general) is expressed 
like this:
"If someone claims that he understands some particular theory,
it means he became used to it".

I understand (no pun intended) what you mean, and indeed, that's very 
often the case, but now always.
I would not fit completely in your, Mark, formula
(nor would some other people on this list, I suspect).
I've used variety of systems myself at different levels
(from a user to a sysadmin).
The system I used the most (as a user and admin) is probably Windows.
The system I would prefer as an admin is FreeBSD.
The system I use for various tasks depends on the particular task: 
I usually choose a system that is the most suitable for that task 
(Mac OS-X included).
