Nikon was years behind the other four big manufacturers in the 70's technology wise. Pentax was the first to apply aperture priority auto (ES) and was a pioneer in electronics in cameras along with Yashica.

Try a year behind Pentax. 1972 saw aperture priority arrive from Nikon in the Nikkormat EL.

Nikon was VERY conservative with the Professional F series, but was somewhat innovative with their non-F series SLR's.
