So has Kodak, (been around for a long time, that is), and depending on
how you measure success, they
too are one of the most successful lens manufactures, as well as film,
chemicals, cameras, (of all levels of sophistication),
and digital products. Still there is some question if they will
survive the digital age, in spite of, or maybe because of
embracing it. Kodak is one of the savviest of marketing companies, as
well as a technology company, and currently
I'm not sure if they have a clue as to what they are doing.

As far as I know Carl Zeiss have been arround longer than anybody on this
list - for a century or so. It's one of the miost successful lens
manufacturers ever. Carl Zeiss have made and sold top quality lenses from
the beginning until today. I guess they know what they are doing. Digital is
fine but extreemly expensive, excluding a lot of professionals around the
world. I - for one - tend to keep forgetting, that people of this list may
very well belong to the richest 5 % of the worlds population. A lot of
people - me included -can't afford a 30000 USD digital Hasselblad. Until I
can I will get along just fine, using a cheaper 6x6 camera for high
quality/resolution photographs.

Zeiss' comments on the future of film. Might be worth reading ;-))

Might be total crap too.
I would venture that if Zeiss has just introduced a new film camera (it
looks nice and $$$$), they have a vested interest in thinking film will be
around for a while.
Besides, it's not just about if film is available, it's also about if film
processing will be available.
